I’ve mentioned this natural diuretic before on Instagram, but have been asked about it a few times lately so I felt that another post was in order! Let’s talk about diuretics first. A diuretic is essentially a tool to help rid the body of excess water, which contributes to edema (or swelling). They are helpful in treating high blood pressure because of their ability to help with excreting salt from the body through diuresis (urination).
I like to drink this in the morning because of the energizing effect it has on my body. Lemon also has a natural tendency to brighten the skin because of the vitamins it contains. Please take note however, that it should not be consumed every morning! Too much of a good thing can sometimes cause rebound issues…and you don’t want to dehydrate yourself. Also, I drink this with a straw because lemon in large amounts can eat away at the enamel on your teeth.
To partake, you’ll need 2 large, organic lemons. Rinse them before using. Bring 2-3 cups of water to a boil on the stove, and slice the lemons into halves. Squeeze the juice into the boiling water (removing the seeds beforehand), and toss the peels into the boiling water as well. Turn the heat off and allow it to simmer for about 5 minutes. It will smell amazing! Once the water has cooled enough, pour a huge cup and enjoy.
